OCMA Past President and Mission Viejo general surgeon Juan Carlos Cobo, MD, F.A.C.S. is the newly-elected Chair of the Mutual Protection Trust (MPT) Board of Trustees. MPT is the medical professional liability provider for the Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc. (CAP). Dr. Cobo’s election occurred at the organization’s annual meeting June 18. He succeeds J. Michael Wormley, MD, a Glendora family practitioner who presided as chair since 1986. Dr. Wormley will continue to contribute to the MPT Board of Trustees as its first Chair Emeritus.

“I’m looking forward to working with my fellow board members and management to meet the challenges in our industry and the high expectations of our members,” Cobo said. Certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Cobo has been a CAP member since 1984. During this time, he has played an integral role in the growth of the organization, serving first on the CAP Board of Directors, then as an MPT Trustee.

“I speak on behalf of the entire organization when I say that we’re excited to work with Dr. Cobo in his new role of trustee chair,” said CEO James L. Weidner. “I also want to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Wormley for his unwavering commitment to CAP and MPT for nearly three decades. I know that he will serve as an admirable mentor to his successor, other board members, and the organization’s management team.”

This month, the MPT Trustees also welcomed two new members to the board – both transitioning from the CAP Board of Directors. Glenn Weissman, MD, an Arcadia otolaryngologist specializing in facial plastic surgery and Andrew Sew Hoy, MD, a Los Angeles orthopedic surgeon, will now help drive the financial success of MPT as board trustees. Drs. Weissman and Sew Hoy have been CAP members since 1999 and 1992, respectively.
