The U.S. Senate passed HR 3962 by unanimous consent this afternoon, which stops the 21 percent cut and provides a 2.2 percent Medicare physician payment update for six months, from June 1 through November 30. The California geographic payment (GPCI) fix and the federal Medicaid matching extension remain in the tax extenders bill (HR 4213) and will be taken up again by the Senate next week.

Physicians who see Medicare patients are facing a great deal of uncertainty. Congress has twice passed temporary fixes to stop the 21% cut to Medicare provider rates scheduled to occur in 2010, but last week failed to act in time to stop those cuts from taking effect on March 1. Absent Congressional action, physicians now face a 21% cut in Medicare reimbursements beginning yesterday.
