The U.S. Senate passed HR 3962 by unanimous consent this afternoon, which stops the 21 percent cut and provides a 2.2 percent Medicare physician payment update for six months, from June 1 through November 30. The California geographic payment (GPCI) fix and the federal Medicaid matching extension remain in the tax extenders bill (HR 4213) and will be taken up again by the Senate next week.

The U.S. House of representatives today passed HR 3961, a bill that would repeal the current Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR), the formula that calls for annual cuts in Medicare physician payments. The 243 to 183 vote was largely on party lines.
 

President Obama Paves the Way for SGR Reform - Posted 7.7.2009

In a significant victory for physicians, the Obama Adminsitration announced today that they will be removing drugs that physicians administer in their offices from the Part B SGR spending cap.  Drugs account for 10% of Part B "physician" expenditures and are 60% of the reason physicians are facing future SGR cuts.  The cost to remove the drugs from Part B is $100 billion.  Starting in 2010, these drug expenditures will be included in the Part D Prescription Drug Program.  The CMA and AMA have been advocating for years to have these drug expenditures removed from the Part B physician SGR

The California Congressional Delegation will be home over the Memorial Day recess from Friday, May 22 to Monday June 1. CMA/OCMA would like to urge all member doctors to make appointments with their Members of Congress during that week. Congress is expected to start to vote on the Medicare payment reform legislation in June. The other major health reform bills will follow in June and July. So it is a crucial time to talk to our Representatives!
